Welcome to the June edition of Member News

Hi everyone,

Well, winter is officially here but in some cases it feels like things are just warming up. We’re into the full swing of awards season and the High Performance squads have just taken part in their first camp, paving the way to a busy six months of international competition. On that note, I’d like to wish our New Zealand team the best of luck as they head to Japan next week for the annual Sanyo Cup. They are a strong looking team and I’m sure they will do us all proud.

The Board has been busy preparing for the AGM and Club Strategy Workshop taking place in September. The supporting documents have gone out to the clubs and I hope to see a delegate attending from each club to help ensure the majority of voices are heard as we plan for next season and beyond.

Yours in Surf,
Brent Warner

FROM THE CEO's DESK

Hi everyone,

Welcome to nearly the shortest day of the year (next Wednesday) as we start the downhill run back to summer! I can’t say any of the mid-winter dips are that appealing; even with the water temperature not that much colder than our so-called summer, but I am looking forward to some more daylight at the end of the day!

It’s great to see the Awards of Excellence evenings going on around the country. These are rare occasions where we get the chance to come together to recognise our peers, both young and old, for their achievements and dedication and they are humbling events to attend. It always makes me wonder how people can fit in so much to their lives.

But as always, there is no real down time, with lots of activity going on. I am always excited to see the BP Leaders for Life programme kicking off again. The revised programme with a 12 month time frame will be something new this year and it will allow a greater level of involvement for the participants- with benefits all round for them and the Surf Life Saving movement.

There is also a lot going on in the High Performance sport area too - with the teams’ preparation underway for the Sanyo Cup in Japan in June, the World Games in Poland in July and the International Surf Rescue Challenge here in NZ at the end of November. Winter is never an easy time to be training for Surf Sport- so a big thanks to all those working hard behind the scenes to get the teams in peak condition for their competitions.

A big thanks also to all the Club Chairs who have taken part in the end of season Regional Club Chairs meetings. Your commitment of time is much appreciated. In less than a week, we will also see the opening of nominations for the four SLSNZ Board member roles that become vacant by rotation this year. Applications have to be in by July 24 and it’s important we get the best possible candidates for the Board Appointments Panel to review. It’s a rewarding role and a critical one for our movement. And you get to tell the CEO what to do!

From a SLSNZ perspective, we are rapidly closing in on June 30, which signals the end of our financial year and the start of 2018/19. For those that are interested, the Strategic Plan for the organisation for 2018/19 and the following two years is now up on our website for any feedback or comment.  In the meantime we now preparing for the auditors to arrive to kick-off the annual reporting process and preparation for the AGM.

And that’s it from me- until next month stay warm!

Cheers,
Paul Dalton

AGM/Strategy Workshop

Surf Life Saving New Zealand's 2017 Clubs Strategy Workshop, Annual General Meeting and national Awards of Excellence will be held at the Heritage Hotel in Auckland on Saturday September 23. Please visit the AGM page of our website for the official AGM documents. Final agendas will be circulated on September 1.

Awards season

The regional Awards of Excellence ceremonies are well underway with the Otago-Southland, Canterbury, Capital Coast and Hawke’s Bay ceremonies already taken place. Congratulations to all of the winners. The ceremonies continue with Taranaki this weekend followed by Gisborne, BOP/Coromandel and Northern Region as we lead up to the national awards in September.

A final reminder that the deadline for National Honours and Awards nominations close on June 30 so the National Committee can begin its work in early July.

Condolences

It is with much sadness that we inform everyone of the passing of three members over the past month. SLSNZ Life Member Bert McCarthny, 91, passed away peacefully on May 24. He was a very proud member and surf lifesaving played a massive part in his life since he joined in 1940.

Beverly Campbell, wife of SLSNZ Life Member Jim Campbell, passed away on June 2 after a long battle with cancer and Waihi Beach Life Member Barry Timbers, 80, passed away peacefully on June 6. He joined the club in 1953 and became a true stalwart, devoting so much of his life to supporting, promoting and assisting the club. Our thoughts are with their families, friends and fellow clubbies at this sad time.

LIFESAVING & EDUCATION NEWS

Emsisoft offer

Late last year we partnered up with global anti-malware and antivirus software company Emsisoft to work on a new research project; using new technology to map currents and rips around key New Zealand beaches over the summer months.

Similar to our work at Surf Life Saving New Zealand, Emsisoft’s efforts begin well before an emergency occurs. That’s why, as part of our partnership, they’re providing Emsisoft Anti-Malware (1PC/1 Year) licenses free of charge to SLSNZ members on a first come, first served basis. Simply email their support team with proof of your membership and they will distribute your license. Go to the Emsisoft website to find out more about their software.

BP Leaders for Life

We are excited to announce the 15 candidates that have been selected to take part in BP Leaders for Life. We had some outstanding applicants this year and we are looking forward to rolling out our first workshop in July.

Peer Support

Congratulations to Paul Carlyon (Otaki), Dave Clark (United North Piha) and Adam Fraser (Fitzroy) who took on the Mt Difficulty Ascent trail run on Saturday to highlight the importance of peer support within the surf lifesaving community. Nerves and a cool morning gave way to sunshine and hard graft as they kicked-off the 25km and soon it was all up, up and up. They hope their adventure has given their fellow clubbies some inspiration to get in amongst new challenges but more importantly new found awareness of the SLSNZ Peer Support Programme.

The $2.32 million redevelopment of the Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service's clubhouse has received an additional $300,000 funding boost from city ratepayers. It leaves the club only $270,000 short of its target. Read more here.
