Welcome to the April edition of Member News

Hi everyone,

The past six months have flown by and as we begin to wrap up another patrol season, it’s the perfect time to reflect on some great achievements. It doesn’t really feel like we had a proper summer this year and our lifeguards have had to operate in some challenging conditions at times. On the fine days we had, many patrols were kept on their toes with an influx of beach goers trying to make the most of the sun. While the overall drowning toll remains disappointing, it could be a lot worse without your efforts and I’d like to thank everyone for their contributions both on the beach and behind the scenes.

But, just because we’re heading into the off season, that doesn’t mean our job is done. Last week’s weather bomb, as ex-tropical cyclone Debbie swept the country, was a prime example of our work outside of the flags. Callout squads from the Eastern Region assisted emergency services, using IRBs to help evacuate residents in the flooded town of Edgecumbe. And no doubt there will be plenty more situations throughout the winter months when lifeguards’ wide-ranging skills will be called upon! Keep up the great work.

Yours in Surf,
Brent Warner

FROM THE CEO's DESK

With Easter this weekend, the end of season is upon us- a brief moment to relax and reflect on another year of "job well done." It has been a challenging summer (if indeed summer is the right word) and everyone deserves a big thanks for the time and energy that went into the many activities that make Surf Life Saving work- whether that be nipper programs, surf sport, lifesaving or club administration; there are a multitude of jobs to be done and lots of busy people doing them! There is a lot to be proud of in what was achieved in 2016/17 and it’s easy to forget about it in the rush to Labour Weekend- which is only a short 27 weeks away!

Of course there is no rest for the wicked and we now start the process of review meetings, fundraising applications, audits, award ceremonies, equipment repair and replacement, annual reports, stock ordering, course scheduling, planning sessions and budget updates! In particular I am looking forward to the end of season Club Chairs meetings- a chance to get out around the country and find out first-hand how things have been going and revalidate what we need to focus on for 2017/18.

On a sporting note, best wishes to all those competing in the World Masters Games and a big thanks to Simone Spencer and her team for putting on the surf lifesaving events at Takapuna. With a number of famous people coming out of retirement just for this event I’m sure the physios will be busy and some more legends written!

Finally from me- another reminder that the deadline for National Honours and Awards nominations is on June 30 so it’s time for clubs to make sure all those tireless workers get their due recognition.

Cheers,
Paul Dalton

ORGANISATIONAL NEWS

Season end

We are praising our lifeguards for their efforts as another season draws to an end with no drownings between the flags. Being a Surf Lifeguard is a big commitment and we're incredibly grateful to our thousands of volunteers around the country that have helped to keep beach-goers safe for another year.

Condolences

It is with sadness that we share the news of two members passing away in recent weeks; Far North Surf Rescue’s Te Amohaere (TA) Rudolph lost her battle with cancer on March 16. The brave and outgoing teen sat her Surf Lifeguard Award in October 2015 and this season helped out the club's new recruits, giving them early morning swim training before school. Here's a tribute from Seven Sharp's Mike Holland who has followed TA's journey.

Jack Ryan, a legend in surf lifesaving circles, passed away on April 4. He was originally a member of Lyall Bay and then New Brighton and won numerous championship titles. He was also part of the NZ team in 1950 which conquered Australia. Our thoughts are with TA and Jack’s families, friends and fellow clubbies at this tough time.

Awards season

We are now leading into the time of year where we celebrate our members’ achievements. The regional Awards of Excellence ceremonies kick-off with the Otago/Southland awards on May 19 and run through to July as we lead up to the national awards in September. Keep an eye out on our website for more news and information about our finalists and award winners.

Careers

We are currently recruiting for two positions within Surf Life Saving New Zealand; Eastern Regional Education Coordinator based in Mt Maunganui and Club Support Officer for Taranaki. Visit the careers page of our website for position descriptions and application information.

WSNZ Board

We are pleased to announce that Michael Bassett-Foss will be SLSNZ's new representative on the Water Safety New Zealand Board. This is a very important role and Michael, a member of Waimarama Surf Life Saving Club and a former SLSNZ Chairman, brings a lot of relevant experience including many years of active participation in the water safety sector.

Emsisoft project

Late last year Emsisoft and Surf Life Saving New Zealand teamed up for the ultimate goal- surf protection. Watch this video to see how we've been using technology to map currents and rips around key New Zealand beaches over the summer months and click here to find out more about the project.

BP IRB Donation

Far North Surf Rescue won the 2017 BP IRB Donation and recently, in front of BP staff, they were presented with their brand new $25,000 IRB, complete with an engine, trailer, fuel bladder, two personal floatation devices, rescue tube and $100 worth of fuel.
